The infamous Rocky Horror Picture Show makes its Blu-ray debut this month in the UK. Arriving packed with special features including outtakes, alternate opening and ending, music videos and just about everything else to keep fans entertained, dressing up and singing along for the next 35 years!

The story plays out as a parody of the sci-fi and horror genre from the 1950’s. Newly engaged couple Brad and Janet are stranded out in the rain when their car breaks down. Knocking on the door of the nearest house they find, a peculiar looking butler, Riff Raff, welcomes them in. From there on in the film switches from Black and White to glorious HD colour with an array of colourful characters including of course Dr. Frank N. Furter, a “sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania” and his Warhol-esque creation, Rocky Horror.

Adapted for the screen from the British stage play of the same name by Richard O’Brien, who wrote both the book and lyrics for the stage, the Rocky Horror Picture Show gained notoriety when it was given a midnight screening back in 1977 and audiences began actively participating. Since then it’s become the longest-running theatrical release in film history with fans dressing up and going along to watch the movie as their favourite characters.

If you’ve seen the film before and been a fan, then this Blu-ray release should be the next item on your list. The remastering of the sound and picture adds a whole new dimension to this classic and when the switch from black and white to colour happens, the screen really comes alive, especially with Frank’s entrance. On Blu-ray, there is a notable difference compared to previous releases.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is also a debut film performance for Tim Curry as Frank. Prior to the role he was mostly seen on television but since then has appeared in nearly 30 feature films including the up and coming Burke & Hare directed by John Landis.
