The Last Airbender (2010)

Based on the animated television series Avatar: The Last Airbender, and directed by M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs) The Last Airbender arrives in cinemas in the UK on August 13th 2009 and tells of the adventures of Aang, a young successor to a long line of Avatars, who must put his childhood ways aside and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations.

Together, Aang and his friends, Katara and Sokka, make their way to the North Pole where they can find a master to teach them the secrets of the craft but they must learn quickly as war on the nations is already being waged by the Fire Lord Ozai. The film also stars Jackson Rathbone (Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse) and Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire).

While you might have wished The Happening didn’t happen and that The Lady in the Water stayed in the water, M. Night Shyamalan movies are definitely something a little different from the mainstream. His technique in storytelling has been copied since his breakthrough movie The Sixth Sense with twist endings that you never see coming until it hits you, but the Devil they say, is in the details and his movies are filled with small delights which in most cases come together in a beautiful and fulfilling climax.

With that in mind, we definitely look forward to The Last Airbender, a movie which at a reported $150million has cost nearly twice as much to make than his previous outtings. We are also curious to see how well the movie translates a primarily Asian influenced cartoon into a mainstream Hollywood movie with predominantly Caucasian actors, something which has caused many fans of the series to speak out against.

The Last Airbender is released by Paramount Pictures in the UK on August 13th 2010.
